What’s Good? Let me get a late pass…

Ok, I need a late pass on some of this shit. Between havin Shawty Lo up on the repeat, here’s a bunch of cuts I’ve been bumin that deserve a little shine, though I’ve not yet had time to give it (and they aren’t terribly new, just slept on… by me).

Atmosphere - Strictly LeakageAtmosphere - YGM
You don’t have to be a fan of Atmosphere to feel this. Hell you don’t even need a backpack! You just gotta feel what they did recently when they made an album and gave it away. That’s love. To top it off, it’s pretty good too. Here’s just one cut, flippin some old classic shit and the one I’m definitely feeling.

Basic Vocab - The General DynamicBasic Vocab - Come Get With It
I had no idea who Basic Vocab was at all. I saw them name dropped a few places and then made a point to listen to the album when I saw it. Hot damn, these Miami cats are worth a listen. This is a jumping cut I’ve been playing out recently. The entire album is worth checkin out though, so make note.

El Michaels Affair - The PJ’s w/ RaekwonEl Michaels Affair - The PJ’s w/ Raekwon
Day was the one who recently tipped me off to this. El Michaels Affair has been on some Wu-Tang cover shit for a bit now and even toured with Raekwon. However, this 12″ was news to me (late news).

NOW, here’s the Pete Rock version and I’m not sure if it’s the or OG or a remix though. Raekwon is hollering “Pete Rock Remix” all up in this, but it really sounds like El Michaels Affair covered this version. Supposedly this will be on NY’s Finest… regardless, it’s crazy nice.

Mojoe - Classic.Ghetto.Soul.Mojoe - Funky Lac
Again, these are more cats I don’t know much about. When I saw it, I grabbed it and was pleasantly surprised. Mojoe is very soulful and of course funky. I hate to make comparisons so let’s just say that if you feelin Sleepy Brown and the Dungeon Fam but want your shit a little bit more underground, then you should check Mojoe out. Funky Lac is my cut though.

Back soon with more good shit!

Slowin my roll in 08?

I’m not going to make excuse on why I haven’t posted in over 2 weeks. I been damn busy, and It doesn’t even matter. All that does matter is that I got some things for your earholes. Chalk this up to the “things i’ve been feeling recently” series. Meanwhile, sit tight cause we got goodies in the can and some special things lines up (Gabe, what up?!).

Spinna - DillagenceDJ Spinna - Dillagence (One 4 Jay) (feat. Phonte of Little Brother)
The homie JDL got at me about this cut. Likely part of the whole homage wave of cuts that started coming out after Dilla passed, this was releases as a 45 by Spinna and made it on the Mick Boogie & Busta Rhymes DILLAGENCE mixtape (though that version has Busta running his mouth on the cut). This is pretty crazy actually. It features Phonte from Little Brother doing his best Dwele impression. He runs through a mess of “classic” Slum Village and Dilla lines. Spinna is the dude… more on that later.

Lil WayneLil Wayne - Always Strapped
“Strawberry paint, seats vanilla puddin”. nuff said. Weezy is crazy with it. is this dude ever gonna release another album or just pump out 50 tracks a month for mixtapes? Why is this shit so catchy? Oh yeah, Juelz Santana is on this cut too if anyone cares. YOUNG MONEY!

Dark Sun RidersDark Sun Riders - Dark Sun Riders
Man, I slept on this album bad in 96. Recently it’s been back in my earholes in heavy rotation. I’ve been an X-Clan fan for a while yet for some reason never really caught up with Dark Sun Riders. Brother J formed Dark Sun Riders after X-Clan split up in 94 (before the reassembly of X-Clan). This cut is definitely good shit though. You gotta give it up to artist/bands that have songs that are their names…

Pete Rock - Heard Em SayPete Rock - Heard Em Say f. Vanessa Sanchez
Pete Rock with a Kanye West cover AND on the positive tip? What’s going on. This is dope though, and I think the 12″ is from 2006 actually. Pete is making moves as of late and coming with a new album for 08. The new Jim Jones (We Roll) cut is cool by me, I ain’t mad. I got high hopes for the new album. Hit up Metal Lungies on the Pete Rock comeback already.

LASTLY… FUCK that new Michael Jackson and Akon shit . Seriously, what the fuck is this? I heard this shit in the car the other day and nearly ran that shit off the road. Y’all need to leave them Michael Jackson songs alone. MICHAEL… shame on you!

Extra P is NICE

Large Professor Partially inspired by that last Marco Polo Radar post, I wanted to take a sec and lay it down for Large Professor. This man is NICE on the production tip, always has been. I’ve always been partial to his remixes (which always make me grab records), but he’s also got some landmark production credits from Main Source to Common’s Resurrection to NasIllmatic (he produced; It Ain’t Hard To Tell, Halftime & One Time 4 Your Mind) . Though I’ve always preferred him as a producer VS MC - though he can hold his own. The man’s discography is not to be overlooked. I took a sec and made a point to revisit Extra P’s work and try to dig out some gems. I found more worth mentioning than I expected and this may be my longest post to date (until I do a DITC one). This is just the tip of the iceberg really…

Main Source - Fakin The Funk
This cut is just slammin. You should all know this cut.

Leaders Of The New School - What’s Next (Large Pro Remix)
I think I was a freshman in high school when I first heard this. I was all over the Native Tongue fam and What’s Next was a hard ass cut already. I was floored with I heard the remix.

Slick Rick-It’s A Boy (Large Pro Remix)
I admit, I never really paid too much attention to this 12″ until recently when my man LRS started pulling this out. The Large Pro remix kills the OG in my opinion.

Common - Resurrection (Extra P Remix)
What really needs to be said here? He also did another remix of this cut too, though I prefer this one.

These next two are straight classics. Both off his 96 album The LP.
