I may be a few days late on the blog-o-sphere… but it’s worth it. Now, I’ve had my ups and down with them Sa-Ra cats, but i gotta raise one up for this shit. Hate on Mr. West and 3000 all you want but this is FIYAH. Video is killin it too.
Since we’re all gonna be tippin some drank this weekend (hopefully not purple), you are all gonna need some fresh cuts for your box as to keep your party in check. Here’s what’s up…
Lil Wayne - Lollipop (JBlow Remix)
OK, OK I know, not more of this song… Lollipop has gone from entertaining to nearly driving me (and I assume US) crazy. Before the “driven crazy” part a few weeks ago I took a crack at remixing the track. Why? I don’t know… I guess I wanted to see if I could take it in a different direction, which was pretty much necessary since i don’t really fuck with synths. So here’s what came out, kinda on the soulful tip.
U-N-I dropped some shit at the end of 07 and it was dope. It’s one of those releases I completely forgot to give some shine to when I first heard it
U-N-I - K.R.E.A.M.
I’m sorry, we just can’t have enough songs about kicks. They get a nod for the Wu Tang and Lupe flip on this cut to good effect. Step on my shoes, I will kill you…
Kidz In The Hall - Move On Up
Now, before these cats blew up a bit with the Drivin Down The Block cut, they dropped an album called School Was My Hustle in 06. It definitely had a mess of great cuts on it too. The is just one, but that album was pretty solid IMHO.
GLC - I Ain’t Even On Yet
One of Kanye’s boys is comin with some interesting shit. I don’t know too much about this cat, but this definitely caught my ear.
And now for a throwback cut…
Da Youngsta’s - Mad Props
Man I love this beat. Apparently, so does Damu (more on him later - FIYAH!). That filtered MPC style of the 90’s was my shit. K-Def is the dude, so go check for him. Bang this.
This post is for the DJs out there. The internet remix game is on SMASH! If you’re rocking Serato these days, you’ve hopefully come to realize that the internet has a wealth of booty to offer. This is the first of a series of post I plan to do on the great mixes floating around. Some cats out there are really putting in work (B.Cause is the dude). While I already miss vinyl (though I still buy), and it’s amazing to see things evolve so fast and make new things possible that weren’t an easy option with only records. Some of these new DJs will never know vinyl. Those of us looking to dig a little deeper are making our own cuts and edits as we can bring them out of the lab and start playing them immediately. Also, we’re hitting up the forums/blogs and networking to get exclusive tracks and offering up trade. So, I figure I’d start it off with one of my own and let it loose here to try to get at some new people and see if there’s DJs out there reading.
And by the way… fuck a “mashup”. I don’t even know how that term came to be, since DJs have been playing different records and acapellas over each other since the shit started. This is nothing new. I digress…
Now I myself am not a “Top 40″ DJ. I can stand a little bit and even make an effort to sprinkle them into the mix here and there. BUT I’ve always felt it’s more fun to figure out more creative ways to rock a crowd and give the people what they want at the same time. Since the requests for the hot radio songs never stop, these white label and bootleg remixes are always fun. Some never see the light of day, but I’m always trying to come up with things. Since I’m actually warming up to some of Kanye West’s new album so I figured if there’s some dance floor longevity here it’s worth putting in some work on the remix tip. I’ve been playing the shit out of Showbiz & A.G.’sSoul Clap these days, so in an effort to retire it for a while I’ve repurposed it here. This isn’t anything crazy or more than a couple hours of work, just wanted to give a little insight on how these things come to be. This mix was actually put together by slicing together two different DIY style acapella rips I found online, which is why it sounds a little funny in a few places. I’ll cut this here and make with the goods.
Daft Punk Louis Vuitton Mix
Apparently it’s a mix by Daft Punk for a Louis Vitton show. They actually work Kanye’s cut into their mix which I thought was pretty interesting. It’s worth a listen. From Discobelle.
there’s loads of cuts from what may be the next Common album flying around (titled Finding Forever). includes production by Premier, Will.I.Am, Kanye West, Dilla and more. i’m only going to post a few i’m feelin, but if this is any indication of what’s going to make the cut then i predict the new album will be a highlight of 07. no idea if these are official or mastered, but check for it cause there’s some damn nice cuts. you go Comm! Common - Black Maybe (feat. Bilal)
The buzz has been building over these Sa-Ra cats for some time. This is on some heavy keyboard, funk tip - think George Clinton, Dilla, ZAPP, with a touch of R. Kelly. Yeah I said it. They’ve been bouncing around labels for a bit, and still don’t have a proper album out (ABB, Ubiquity, Sound In Color, and finally Kanye scooped them on G.O.O.D. Music). But the 12″s, promos, remixes, covers and mixes have all had great shit on them. If the full album ever comes out and these guys haven’t blew their load yet, it will bang. Meanwhile, I am feelin them.
