Saturday, it’s a Saturday…

De La Soul - SaturdaysI feel like I have to bounce back from my Top 40 post fast… so, here’s what I got. De La Soul – A Rollerskate Jam Named “Saturdays”. It’s a jam, you know it. But have you heard all the remixes? In the past few years I’ve been paying special attention to the 12″s of this I see – specifically because of those extra cuts (I had heard there were more). I thought I had heard them all, then about a year or so ago I found a new one (all be it, possibly a bootleg – see Disco Fever Mix below). So, I’m taking a second to give props to the remixes. Heard others you’re feelin? Hit me up!

PS I’m not fucking with the house remixes.

This was off the 12″ with all the house mixes on he flip side. Not really a remix at all, just a promo, shout out cut.

Now this is the cut. Dres of Black Sheep rips it on this one. The Woody Woodpecker noise is a bit annoying, and the hooks are short but it’s a posee cut so extra verse time was needed for everyone to rep.

De La Soul – Saturdays (Ladies Nite Decision)

Another banger. Extra keys, some disco flair, a touch house, chunked up bass, more shouts outs for the ladies.

Now this is the most recent one I found, and the one y’all might not have heard (possibly because it’s a bootleg). Nothing special really, but I dig it. It’s longer, had more breaks and subtle change ups.

And now for something new…

The 14 year old Native Tongue

Chi-Ali Chi, we hardly knew ya. I first heard Chi-Ali on the Black Sheep album (see “Pass The 40″). I remember thinking “who the fuck was that kid”?! Well, in 92 I got my answer. Chi-Ali released his own solo album The Fabulous Chi Ali, at the age of 14. Aside from maybe one cut, this album didn’t ride the train of the “young rapper” or stink of a theme album. Instead, it just banged. This was no doubt thanks to the front to back production by The World Famous Beatnuts. So, I recently snuck it back into my listening rotation. I had forgotten all about this album, and there’s some great cuts on it. I’m a sucker for the early 90s shit though. He had a cameos after this album, but none compared to his debut. Long story short… Chi-Ali got locked up in 2001 after appearing on America’s Most Wanted.

don’t call it a come back

Black Sheep I won’t, and it ain’t. Apparently they had a slight resurgence recently that sparked the creative juices and a new album deal – I’m not sure. But don’t get me wrong, I got nothing but love for Dres and Mista Lawnge, and hell A Wolf In Sheeps Clothing is classic! The facts are this; Black Sheep seem to have a new album coming out, I got my hands on a version and I’m kinda bummed. I admit, I may again be jumpin the gun (see Lupe post), because this album isn’t out yet and may not come out at all or even in the form I’ve heard. So, I’m not going to go too crazy with picking it apart. In contrast, I’d like to hype a good cut.

FRIDAY SPECIAL: REEEEMMMIIIIIIXXX!

FRIDAY SPECIAL
On Fridays I’m going to start posting something different or special. Since my original intention for this site was to be a bit of a self promotional project as well as a podcast, it seems only fitting to dedicate a day to trying somethin gnew. As time progresses I hope to be posting up short mixes as well – but for now i’m offering up some recent remixes/re-edits I’ve been toying around with. Mostly, I just do this stuff for fun and it never actually sees the light of day. I’ve recently purchased Serato though, so I have a feeling this may be changing. It’s time to start giving up the good.

First, Strobelite Sheila. I’ve had this song in my head every day since I started working on this one a week ago. I hope karmically this will release me. It’s a blend of Ready For The World and a chopped version of Black Sheep’s Strobelite Honey with some extra stuff thrown in. I’ve been playing this one way too much.

Next is the very club friendly sounding mix of Run DMC’s My Adidas over the Vans beat (a guilty pleasure track). I didn’t really spend too much time on this one, I just really though the concept was funny. Also, I didn’t have the instrumental of the Vans cut at the time, so I wound up chopping and filtering the song then programming the drums from scratch. Regardless, it bumps!

I do plan on eventually trying these out at my local residency, so if you happen to be in San Diego, swing through Landlord Jim’s and keep your ears peeled.

ANOTHER NOTE: Strobelite Sheila was update on 12/20/06 with a better mixed file – grab it!
