The other OTHER wikki-wikki song

Mos Def - Jam On ItIn 2001, as part of the Rawkus fueled Lyricist Lounge compilations Mos Def recorded an homage to Jam On It. When it first came out, I wasn’t diggin it at all. It always seemed like kind of a taboo thing to do – rerecord/cover a hip hop classic? Long story short, it grew on me.

I’d sort of forgotten about the 12″ until recently. At my weekly gig, towards the end of my sets i’ve been segueing into more electro stuff as the night gets more jumpin. This 12″ has found it’s way back into rotation.

damn, that’s nice. and i have no problem with somebody remaking this song – it was such an overplayed top 40 staple when it came out, it became a little cringe inducing.

i still can’t listen to newcleus’ version. so it’s nice to hear it reinterpreted here by the great mo.
