I’ve been sitting on this new RJD2 album for about a month now. I’ve listened to it a few times, and have still not yet formulated a solid opinion. See, I’m actually a big fan of his work – from hip hop production to solo efforts, he’s been very consistent and dare I say inspirational. He’s also been progressively changing up his sound since his first LP. The jump was not drastic from Deadringer to Since We Last Spoke – but it was notable.

The new LP, The Third Hand, is quite different. He left Def Jux, he sings on nearly every track and there seems to be a progression towards a sound I can’t place my finger on (and I’ll cease to make a comparison or I’ll get berated). The drum programming is still crazy good, and if I can just let go of the fact it’s RJ I can actually dig this album (and have been). I suppose it’s disappointing based on expectations, but over it’s really not bad – just different. It’s catchy, poppy, and very well produced. So I ain’t mad atcha – and hell… changing up worked for Radiohead – so go on with you self RJ. Here’s a few cuts. It’s worth a listen.
